The Astronomical Society of Malta is organising a basic course in astronomy at the German-Maltese Circle, 141, Messina Palace, St Christopher Street, Valletta starting on Tuesday at 6.30 p.m.

The course consists of five lectures every Tuesday until May 24 and two observation sessions from Dingli Cliffs on May 13 and 27. Telescopes will be set up by society members.

The registration fee for the course is Lm15.

Meanwhile, society public relations officer Sammy Grech has sent in these two photographs by Vincent Zammit showing Jupiter and the Horse Head Nebula in Orion shining low in the southwest as winter gives way to the warm summer nights.

Jupiter is the brightest object after the moon in the south eastern sky at dusk. It outshines all other stars until Venus steals the show in the coming months.

Those who wish to learn more about astronomy may contact Mr Grech on 2145 2270.
