The Council of European Bishops' Conferences has written to Pope Benedict XVI to congratulate him on his election as Pontiff.

"In the joy of the Risen Christ with deep gratitude we have welcomed Your election as the Vicar of Christ and our Pope," the bishops said.

"The Council of European Bishops' Conferences and all the bishops of our continent want to thank you for having welcomed in deep trust the call of Jesus to follow Him 'in his vineyard' as a successor of Peter.

"Our prayers and our filial communion shall accompany you constantly in your ministry. You can count on this promise, especially in the moments when the cross will be heavier to bear," Europe's bishops said.

"We totally adhere to your exhortation to 'go forward' in unity with you, so that the inhabitants of our Europe can be 'strengthened in their faith' and grow in that communion of which You are the first servant and guarantor. We wish to work with you to proceed toward the full and visible unity of all the disciples of the Lord."

The bishops said they were certain that St Benedict and John Paul II would be particularly close to Pope Benedict XVI.

"That the Risen Christ and Mary, His most holy Mother, may take care of you at every step with joy, light and love," the bishops concluded.

The Pope was also congratulated by the President of the Commission of Catholic Bishops' Conferences of the European Community (COMECE), Bishop Josef Homeyer.

"We know from various statements of the Holy Father that the good of Europe is very important to him. Long before the start of his pontificate, Benedict XVI reflected on the concept and the reality of Europe.

He has made declarations on the challenges that the EU faces, such as the evolution of biotechnology and the accession of Turkey. He is moved by questions of how the Christian faith can be animated in Europe, the continuation of that identity and the protection and further development of human dignity.

"Benedict XVI will vehemently champion the unconditional priority of human dignity and human rights, the fundamental role of marriage and family in European society and a sense what is sacred among Europeans. His conviction that Europe needs 'a new - indeed a critical and humble acceptance - of itself' is vitally important for Europe and resonates with us all," Bishop Josef Homeyer said.

The Bishop said Benedict XVI is particularly conscious of the challenges to the Church, both from within and from without.

"He will respond to these challenges and lead the Church into the future with his deep faith and spiritual strength. Our prayers and blessings will accompany him on his way," he said.
