Pierre Berbizier was named as Italy coach this week. The Frenchman replaced John Kirwan, who was sacked at the start of April following Italy's disappointing Six Nations.

The Italian Rugby Federation (FIR) announced on its website that Berbizier had been contracted until the end of the 2007 World Cup in France.

The 46-year-old has huge international experience, both as a player and a coach. During his 10-year international career at scrumhalf, Berbizier earned 56 caps, including 13 as captain.

With him in the team, France won six Five Nations tournaments, including grand slams in 1981 and 1987.

He was also part of the side that finished runner-up to New Zealand at the inaugural World Cup in 1987.
