Limited dredging of the fairway at Salina Bay will be carried out to enable small barges to reach the channel at the inner part of the bay, Infrastructure Minister Ninu Zammit said in Parliament yesterday.

He explained that the channel was being cleaned as part of a flood relief project to avert danger in Burmarrad and Kennedy Grove. The barges would need to carry material to an offshore dumping site.

The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Evarist Bartolo, who asked why this dredging would be carried out during the peak tourist season.

Mr Zammit said this work had to be carried out when the sea was calm and could not be postponed to after October.
