A leak from petroleum tank number 7 was noted at the Enemalta petroleum storage depot in Birzebbuga, yesterday, Enemalta said in a statement.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the leak was a result of a structural defect in the tanks that had escaped detection in earlier routine inspections.

Measurements indicated that since yesterday, tank 7 has leaked about 2,150 litres of petroleum having a commercial value of under Lm1,000.

The leak has been seen to and the petroleum in the tank is being pumped to another tank to enable the repair work to be carried out.

"Safety and health inspections were carried out. There are no health hazards for the employees or for anyone living or being nearby," Enemalta added.
