Time flies, though seen from our human standpoint it stirs up memories and emotions. In 1950, we had emigrated to Australia together with the tens of thousands of Maltese who left Malta in those years. While on holiday, it is a pleasure to again read The Times which is full of factual information.
On asking a few young relatives, I was surprised to learn that none knows that Pawlu Boffa had campaigned in the post-war years to grant women the right to vote, which was incorporated in the election set-up in due course. Mabel Strickland had done likewise.
Dr Boffa and his government had quite sensibly encouraged emigration to ease the unemployment problem at that time and had even appointed a Minister of Emigration - John Cole, who worked hard for the good of all Maltese. This gentleman died a few years ago in Australia.
While here on holiday, I saw the monument of Sir Paul at Valletta and could not help but remember this former Prime Minister and avant garde statesman - a humble yet great man who was greatly respected.
It is a shame that the knighthood in recognition of a lifetime of public service to the Maltese people is not inscribed on his monument.
Before leaving our dear Malta, I say good luck to all Maltese and may God bless you all!
