Truck driver seriously injured

The driver of a trailer truck was seriously injured in an accident involving a similar vehicle pulling a container and a car in Civil Aviation Street, Gudja yesterday at about 2.30 p.m.

The trailer truck driver, Paul Busuttil, 45, of Zejtun, was rushed to hospital suffering from grievous head injuries. The other driver, Spiro Manicaro, 52, of Tarxien, was slightly injured and a 48-year-old woman driving the car escaped unhurt.

The police believe the woman, driving a Hillman Hunter from Gudja towards the airport, was first involved in a collision with Mr Manicaro's truck heading in the same direction. The trailer, used for carrying containers, was not transporting any. The trailer then crashed head-on against a Leyland truck, which was pulling a white container, being driven in the opposite direction by Mr Busuttil.

Members of the Civil Protection Department were called to take the drivers out of the mangled cabins.

Magistrate Joseph Cassar appointed a team of court experts to help him in an inquiry.
