The Housing Authority is to subsidise the installation of more lifts in government buildings in a bid to improve the lives of people who have mobility problems.

"Putting lifts into older government buildings has significantly improved the lives of hundreds of families," said authority chairman Marisa Micallef.

"The Housing Authority has spent over Lm1,026,000 and installed 65 lifts in recent years. We hope that ... the lift scheme will continue to provide an invaluable service, not only for families with a disability but for the many people who have mobility problems associated with illness or old age''.

The authority said it would start receiving applications for the installation of lifts in blocks and entrances of apartments built by the government or the authority in Malta and Gozo and occupied by tenants recognised by the government.

At least one of the applicants, or his/her relative that lives in the building must have a disability problem related to mobility or have a mobility problem, the authority said. A board set up in consultation with the National Commission for Persons with Disability must confirm the problem.

When a person is the owner of an apartment and has a disability problem related to mobility, a 50 per cent subsidy will be given on his/her share of the lift installation.
