The Friends of the National Archives, in collaboration with the National Archives and Archive-Skills Consultancy UK, are organising two full-day courses. The first is "Enhancing Efficiency through Records Management", which will be held on Tuesday, and the second - "Digitisation in Archives" - on Wednesday, both courses held at the head office of the National Archives, Rabat.

The first training course is an in-depth handling of the principles and practice of records management in the modern hybrid paper and digital environment. Thus the course sets out the principles and practices behind good records management and underlines the benefits to government and business of effective RM - regardless of the media of the material.

The course is presented and facilitated by Margaret Crockett and Janet Foster, directors of Archive-Skills UK Consultancy Ltd. The records management implications of the new archives legislation on government and the private sector will be explained by head of Archives Charles Farrugia.

The second course discusses the challenges of digitising archival holdings, and also puts before participants a framework that can be adopted to different digitisation initiatives. The pros and cons of digitisation and other processes such as microfilming will be discussed. A demonstration of the microfilming process will be conducted on site.

Participants will also hear about the latest developments resulting from a study which the National Archives is conducting jointly with a local software development company, Linguamine Ltd. A demonstration of the software will also be given. Students will be able to compare the output of both microfilm and digitised surrogates and also evaluate the processes involved in their long-term preservation and access.

Those interested to register for any of these two courses can write to the Friends of the National Archives, c/o National Archives of Malta, Santo Spirito, Rabat RBT 12. For further information, contact Ms Alison Borg-Hili on 2145-9863 or e-mail charles.j.farrugia@gov.mt. Places are limited and acceptance will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
