The intricacies of theatre criticism is the theme of a one-week course starting today at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, in Valletta.

Titled A Means of Translating the Language of Theatre into the Language of Life, the course is being conducted by Kalina Stefanova, vice-president of the International Association of Theatre Critics and associate professor of theatre criticism at the National Academy for Theatre and Film Arts in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The course, which is being run in collaboration with The Mediterranean Institute Theatre Studies Programme of the University of Malta, is a mixture of lectures, seminars and workshops.

The lectures will introduce some of the world models of theatre criticism, while the seminars will focus on the most controversial and topical issues of theatre criticism today.

The workshops - the emphasis of the course - will be on creative writing in theatre criticism, based on performances that participants will attend at St James and Manoel Theatre.

The participation fee is Lm20 with concessions at Lm10 for students and holders of St James Cavalier Journalists' Culture Card. It is free for students attending the theatre studies course at the university.
