With utmost interest I started reading the article Ryanair Plans To Fly One Million Passengers To Malta (March 21) until that is I got to the part were Tourism Minister Francis Zammit Dimech spoke about "cushioning the impact on Air Malta".
The audacity of Dr Zammit Dimech! He is talking about an airline that has been operating in the red, losing money, for years. An airline that even though it had a monopoly on flying to and from the island could not make a profit. Air Malta couldn't care less for its passengers; why are we now worried about its viability?
For years my family, and I'm sure thousands of others, have had problems, year after year, getting a connecting flight into Malta.
One would think an airline with such a monopoly would strive to meet demand, not Air Malta, why should they even bother! And now they are worried about a low fare airline that will most likely accomplish with a profit what they couldn't.
The people in charge should have worried and made changes years ago. Instead of alienating passengers with no seat availability they should have looked into accommodating passengers with more flights, in any successful business known as supply and demand.
I truly hope the powers that be keep in mind the interest of the flying public not the protection of the fat cats that couldn't care less.
