The Maltese authorities received 2,452 applications for visas from Chinese citizens between July last year and March 30 this year, Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg told Leo Brincat (MLP) in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.

He said 1,793 were accepted and 659 were refused.

Asked by Mr Brincat about the stage of the investigation into alleged abuse in the issue of the visas, Dr Borg said the investigation had not yet been concluded.

Mr Brincat also asked the minister to table the report signed by Malta's Ambassador to China on visa procedures which the Foreign Ministry had given to the police.

Dr Borg said it was not appropriate to publish documents given to the police during the course of investigations.
