The state of health of Prince Rainier of Monaco remained "precarious" yesterday and his hopes of recovery were "extremely weak", his doctors said.

The palace has said Prince Rainier's son Albert, 47, had assumed the duties of his sick 81-year-old father as monarch of the tiny state on the Mediterranean coast.

"The state of health of His Most Serene Highness Prince Rainier III still remains precarious," his doctors said in a medical bulletin. "Hope for a favourable outcome remains extremely weak," they said.
