Gunmen fired at Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas's headquarters in the West Bank yesterday, causing no casualties, witnesses said.

They said Mr Abbas was in the Ramallah compound but left shortly after the shooting. Initially they said he was not there at the time.

The gunmen were from a breakaway group of the ruling Palestinian faction Fatah, militant sources said.

Mr Abbas's efforts to reform the Palestinian Authority have met with resistance from grassroots militant groups waging a more than four-year-old uprising against Israel.
