New Munich route a link to 100 destinations

The new Lufthansa direct flight linking Malta to Munich offers greater options for the transfer of passengers to Europe, North America and Asia, Lufthansa's general manager Eric Mathis said.

Munich airport is Lufthansa's second major hub airport and operates connections to over 100 destinations, including long-haul destinations, thus increasing the number of potential connections for both the business and leisure traveller.

"In addition to the established daily flights to Frankfurt, the Munich route offers easier connectivity to other destinations serviced by Lufthansa as well as the other partner-airlines within the Star Alliance" Mr Mathis said.

Mr Mathis was welcoming the first passengers arriving in Malta from Munich on Monday. The new service, three weekly flights to Munich airport, will increase the weekly capacity operated by Lufthansa to and from Malta by 30 per cent.

Lufthansa is offering a special introductory offer in connection with the launch of the new route.

Malta International Airport said it supports Lufthansa's decision to expand its operations to Munich as the new route should introduce new connections to Malta.

MIA was very active in attracting new airlines to operate to Malta as well as encouraging established airlines to increase their frequency or introduce new routes, the airport company said.

Lufthansa is operating the new service with an Airbus A319. Malta has been served with a daily flight to Frankfurt for the past 10 years.

The flights from Munich to Malta leave every Wednesday, Friday and Sunday at 11 p.m. arriving in Malta at 1.15 a.m. while the flights from Malta to Munich leave every Monday, Thursday and Saturday at 3.15 a.m. arriving in Munich at 5.50 a.m.
