Over 3,000 of registered jobless are under 30

A total of 8,094 unemployed persons were registering under Part 1 and Part 2 of the unemployment register last month, the National Statistics Office said.

Of these, 6,419, or 79.3 were men, and 1,675, or 20.7, per cent were women.

The number of registered unemployed decreased by 86 over the preceding month. On an annual basis, there was a decrease of 736 persons on the unemployment register.

The new registrants under Part 1 of the unemployment register amounted to 1,565 last month.

The age distribution indicates that 3,083, or 38.1 per cent, of the registered unemployed are under 30 years old. On the other hand, 2,805, or 34.7 per cent, are over 45 years of age.

In the period under review, 3,372, or 41.7 per cent of the registered unemployed, had been registering for work for under 20 weeks.

Of those registering for work, 7,388 lived in Malta and 706 lived in Gozo, the NSO added.

The unemployment rate last October stood at 5.6 per cent of the labour supply. The rate for men was 6.3 per cent whereas that of women was 3.9 per cent.

Last October, the long-term unemployment rate stood at two per cent, whereas the unemployment rate for persons 45 years old and over stood at 4.3 per in during the same month.

The unemployment rate among young people was 8.2 per cent. The rate of unemployment among males under 25 years was 9.5 per cent and that of females was 6.4 per cent.
