Appreciation - Guzè Cassar Pullicino
Professor ARNOLD CASSOLA writes:
Guzè Cassar Pullicino is no longer with us. The last time I saw him was around a year ago at an old people's home in Balzan. He was already weak and, unfortunately, no longer able to continue with the academic work which took up most of his adult life, for the benefit of all us Maltese and Gozitans.
Guzè (unfortunately, I cannot call him Dr Cassar Pullicino because in the early Nineties the short-sighted University authorities turned down a request by Professor Oliver Friggieri and myself to award him an honorary doctorate!) is remembered by most for his work in the field of folklore.
I will let others speak of his qualities in that particular field. Instead, I have to thank him for the great influence he had on my academic formation. I did not know him, but his three-volume book Kitba u kittieba tal-Malti, especially the first volume, proved to be the catalyst of my "conversion" to Maltese literature in the second half of the Seventies, when I was studying at the universities of Pisa and Urbino.
My Italian academic formation taught me to appreciate the historical, philological and comparative approach. Guzè Cassar Pullicino's short footnotes, written in minute print, opened up to me a new world made up of the Abate Boccadifuoco's diatribe against the Maltese speaking affected Italian; Giovanni Antonio Vassallo's short story in verse on Fra Caspru and many others.
When, in 1987, my eyes went crazy with excitement on perusing the oldest manuscript dictionary of the Maltese language at the Biblioteca Vallicelliana in Rome, hitherto unknown to Maltese scholars, it was thanks to Guzè's little footnote on the knight Thezan (quoted from Mifsud) that I immediately recognised what this dictionary really was.
Then I got to know him personally. What struck me about him was that, despite the enormous wealth of materials he had produced over the years researching Maltese identity, he was of an extreme humility. Never did he raise his voice, never was he angry: he was always ready to help you with your questions. As an academic at the University, I must have sent various students to him for advice on their dissertations. And I am sure that these young students, today young adults, appreciate to this day his patience and generosity.
Goodbye, Guzè. You gave much to your country and fellow countrymen and women. Unfortunately, because of your contained humility, our country did not repay you as much as it should have.
Up there, where you are now, your academic and strong human qualities will ensure that you will be held in the highest of esteem.
Appreciation - Liz Frendo Jones
Ms Liz Tabone writes:
I have known Liz since our early teens and our friendship has been constant throughout the years.
When Liz passed away on March 8, in a flash so many thoughts flooded my mind from the first time we met right up to this day - the laughs, the boyfriends we shared as teenagers, the carefree single years of being in the same klikka and much much more as we grew older, got married and had our families.
Anyone who knew Liz recognised instantly that she was an open book, an honest down-to-earth person and a true friend. Liz was one of 12 children and grew up to be a tomboy playing football with her brothers and neighbours in New Street. She was in fact a great supporter of Milan. She was passionate about the things she believed in and I can remember some Sunday afternoons when Liz and some of our friends would come over for tea and inevitably we would end up discussing some hot topic - politics or religion and she would defend her beliefs at all costs!
When I heard about Liz's illness in December 2003, I was devastated as were all the people who loved her or came in contact with her. From the start, she fought her illness with bravery and determination to overcome it. In fact, her very words to me were that she was fighting this battle so she could spend more time with her beloved family whom she loved so dearly and around whom her life revolved, and to get to know her Lord more and more.
These two factors became the driving force that gave her the will to carry on. Sadly for us, this was not the plan the Lord had for her. We grieve, and rightly so, because there will never be another "Liz" for Noel, Allan, Edward and Joanna and for their sisters and brothers and for us, her long-time friends, but we know without a doubt that she has gone to her eternal home and is safe in the arms of the Lord in whom she put her trust completely.
Liz has left us, but her strength of character, the very essence of Liz, has left an indelible imprint on all of us.
Go in peace, dear friend. You have finished the race ahead of us and have won the coveted prize and for this reason we rejoice even in our grief. Your celebration with the Lord will never come to an end.
On behalf of all your close friends, au revoir, until we meet again...
