Grech in quarter-finals

Joe Grech is through to the quarter-finals of the World Billiards Championship Time Format after beating Singapore's Freddie Soh 1,314-615 in Qawra last night.

The Hamrun-born cueist had advanced to the knock-out stages after topping Group D with three wins. He is the only local player to figure in this morning's quarter-finals. Paul Mifsud, who also made it to the Last 16, after finishing second in Group A, was beaten by India's Alok Kumar 1,020-651 over the two two-hour sessions.

Today, Grech plays India's Ashok Shandilya. Yesterday, he eliminated Ireland's Larry Drennan.

Alex Borg, winner of snooker's Med Cup, Pullu Grech, Frans Mintoff and Duncan Bezzina also took part in the tournament but failed to qualify from the group stage.
