The Astronomical Society of Malta is welcoming spring with an observation session for the public at Ghar id-Dud, Sliema, this evening from 7 p.m. onwards.

The society said that of particular interest are the giant planets Jupiter and Saturn, both well placed in the sky, together with a quarter moon, for observation using telescopes set up by society members.

Spring starts on March 21 and on this particular day the duration of day and night is the same, that is 12 hours. The society explained that this day is known as the Spring Equinox. In astronomy the Equinox is the moment when the sun reaches one of two intersections between the ecliptic and the celestial equator.
