The waterfront at Pinto Wharf is to be paved and landscaped in the coming weeks to complete the transformation of this once dilapidated area into what the developers say will become one of Malta's most picturesque leisure spots, where the public will be able to enjoy al fresco dining, shopping and entertainment in a pedestrianised area.
The 18th century Pinto Stores, which provide a "spectacular architectural backdrop" to the quayside, have already been restored.
The developers, Valletta Waterfront, are also working to complete the full restoration of the old sea wall along Pinto Wharf, while works are underway to install utilities in the buildings along the wharf.
The various bars, cafés, restaurants and retail outlets are set to start operating in June, to complete the first phase of the Valletta Waterfront development, whose main focus is the building of a cruise passenger terminal.
"Work is on schedule," Chris Paris, manager of operations at Viset plc, said.
Construction has also begun on a second cruise passenger terminal, to be located at Forni stores, built by Grandmaster De Vilhena.
An underground tunnel is also being built. It will lead from the second terminal to what will become the Forni Shopping Centre. The tunnel is intended to provide cruise liner passengers with an easy route to and from their terminal during their stay.
