At least 25 people were feared drowned yesterday after a bus fell into a canal in the western Indian state of Gujarat, police said.

A senior police official said the bus plunged into the canal in Kheda district when the driver lost control.

"Nearly 25 passengers on the bus are feared dead. One passenger who survived the accident after somehow swimming to safety informed the police that there were at least 25 passengers on the bus," district superintendent of police S.S. Trivedi said.

He said the bus was submerged and the flow of water was too strong for search operations to be carried out. No other details were available.
