Gozo Channel ferries carried 721,272 passengers in the last quarter of 2004, an increase of 16,601 passengers, or 2.4 per cent, over the same period a year before, the National Statistics Office said yesterday.

In contrast fewer passenger vehicles made the crossing, down by 3,203 to 197,976, or 1.6 per cent, over the corresponding period in 2003.

In the three months under review, Gozo Channel performed 4,264 trips between the two islands, an increase of 98, or 2.4 per cent, over the same period the year before.

The Malita carried 306,611 passengers, or 42.5 per cent of the total passengers handled in this period.

The other two main ferries, Ta' Pinu and Gaudos, carried 229,178 and 185,282 passengers respectively.
