Culture Minister Francis Zammit Dimech said the government was committed to increasing awareness among both private and public entities on how to tap EU funds for culture.
The minister was opening the first of three information seminar on the subject which yesterday was for representatives of government departments and public entities, at St James Cavalier, in Valletta.
Dr Zammit Dimech pointed out that since Malta started taking part in Culture 2000 it had managed to tap funds for eight selected projects. Several Maltese entities had benefited, including the university and Heritage Malta.
The support being given by the European Commission was quite substantial, amounting to around €125,000 for each annual project - 50 per cent of the total budget and rising to 60 per cent for some, Dr Zammit Dimech said.
He stressed that public entities should encourage and assist private enterprises and non-governmental organisations to take advantage of Culture 2000 and other EU programmes that provide funding.
The seminar was addressed by Jochem Wernscheid, a specialist on EU cultural projects.
