The Health Department is in the process of acquiring new equipment to decontaminate and process clinical waste. The equipment will be installed at Mater Dei Hospital.

Health Minister Louis Deguara said the department had no plans to buy an incinerator for St Luke's Hospital (whether new or second-hand) but it would seek to reduce emissions from the existing incinerator until it was closed and the new equipment at Mater Dei commissioned.

The minister was replying to a parliamentary question by Karl Chircop (MLP).
