The line-up for last week's Cynergi Squash Open included no fewer than 15 of the top 16 players in the national rankings. Not surprisingly, with such a high class field, most of the matches were extremely close affairs.
Once again, members from the women's national team took part in the competition and played against their male counterparts.
The semi-finals were two very different games. Mark Lupi, the Marsa Open winner, defeated Karl Grech Orr in under 30 minutes. Grech Orr, so prominent in the Malta Half-Marathon last month, was clearly still suffering from 'race legs'.
In the other semi-final, Bernard Bugeja defeated Ivan Balzan in a very close and hard-fought game. Balzan still tops the Malta Squash rankings, but both Bugeja and Lupi are closing in.
The final was an entertaining game, with Lupi, having the benefit of an easier semi-final, proving too quick for Bugeja. The score was 3-1 to Lupi who has now won the last two Malta Squash ranking tournaments.
