Tenders for the management of the new Institute for Tourism Studies (ITS) centre in Gozo are being received after the green light was given to invest €1.3 million in the project.
The project involves the total demolition of the current structure, in Qala, and the reconstruction of a new training facility that maximises the use of the area.
At the same time, the new institute allows for the provision of new courses and initiatives on a practical level.
The project includes the construction of a restaurant, bar, main kitchen, kitchens for training purposes, a reception area, classrooms, laundry and facilities for housekeeping.
Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono said the project made it possible for Gozitan workers and students who wished to pursue a career in the tourism industry to benefit from further training opportunities and a wider selection of courses in Gozo.
The ITS Gozo centre started operating in 1989. Courses were transferred to the current premises in Qala, which was previously a secondary school for girls. The centre has introduced different courses throughout these last years, including courses that lead to City & Guilds certification. The centre is offering two part-time courses and one full-time course to a total of 41 people.
This project was proposed by the Ministry for Gozo and is one of the infrastructural projects to be carried out in Gozo under the Structural Funds for Malta for 2004-2006, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
