Appreciation - Julian P. Zammit
Alan Bartoli, Ian Mizzi and Julian Zammit Tabona write:
Julian's untimely death comes as a great shock to all of us who had the privilege to know him. Julian's outgoing personality ensured that he had a vast pool of friends and acquaintances. To us he was our close and treasured friend.
The foundation of our friendship was laid for the first time in the autumn of 1967, on our first day at St Edward's College, as boarders. Over our college years we built a solid bond of friendship that was second to none.
It is impossible to recount all our experiences, most hilarious, some sad, but we came through together and our lives remained entwined long after school leaving.
Our first car escapades were naturally in Julian's, our nights out at Griffin, Saddles, Gianpula... countless memories... but the strongest remain at Gerald and Julian's garage in Gzira, where we would meet up every Saturday afternoon.
Julian was always enthusiastic in whatever we did and he always supported our ideas. Ready to roll up his sleeves and get his hands dirty. Many times quite literally, especially if the help we required was of a mechanical nature.
We shall always remember his jovial, forgiving character. Like the first time we went skiing together. While most of us had skied before, it was Julian's first time.
He proceeded to invent a new way to come down a slope - on his belly. He took it in his stride and still laughed about it yesterday week when we were out to dinner together.
He was the kindest soul in the world and always sincere. With us he never had an angry moment or a bad mood. He was a good husband and father, a good son and brother, a good friend.
Eternally optimistic, he was full of energy, full of ideas, begging for more time of late to accomplish his many dreams.
Yesterday week he also told us that he wished to slow down. He had everything he really needed, and wished to have more time for Maria and Julia.
Unknown to him God had other plans for him. Like his family, we were initially devastated by his loss, but over the last few days we were impressed by the impact his short life had on everybody he met and know for sure, that, although his time had run out, he had served a very special purpose.
We will miss Julian dearly. However, we know that he will be with us in spirit for ever.
Our deepest sympathy goes to his mother Maria, and his brother Gerald, who he loved dearly.
Also to his wife Maria and daughter Julia who he treasured. We pledge that the friendship we had with Julian will live through them.
