Gharghur local council has strongly deplored an incident on Friday when the main door of the deputy mayor's residence was set on fire.

The incident happened in the early hours when somebody doused the door with flammable liquid and set it alight with burning tyres.

The deputy mayor, Mark Azzopardi, his mother and brother were rescued from the roof by members of the Civil Protection Department. The door was extensively damaged, as was the hall.

Mr Azzopardi, who was elected on the Nationalist ticket, is serving his second term on the Gharghur council.

The council called for better police surveillance at Gharghur.
