A total of 4,632 driving tests were held between last May and the end of last January. There were 2,536 failures, Transport Minister Jesmond Mugliett told Roderick Galdes (MLP) in reply to a parliamentary question yesterday.
The minister said the tests were conducted by six persons employed by the Malta Transport Authority.
A new driving test compatible with that of the EU was introduced last May. It includes at least 25 minutes of road driving.
Mr Mugliett said many candidates were showing themselves to be inadequately prepared and were making many mistakes.
The minister said 48 per cent passed the test last May, 57 per cent in June, 58 per cent in July, 43 per cent in August, 47 per cent in September, 36 per cent in October, 27 per cent in November, 42 per cent in December and 44 per cent in January.
