Foundation Day lunch at the Westin Dragonara Resort on February 15 was another memorable occasion attended by guests of honour, Mrs Mary Fenech Adami, wife of the President of Malta, and Mrs Catherine Gonzi, wife of the Prime Minister.

Foundation Day lunch is a yearly event during which the Council pays tribute to founder members and past members for their valuable contribution to society in particular to the advancement of women. For many years the council has been pro-active in its initiatives to ensure that equality of opportunity is extended to a wider range of areas other than employment.

During the lunch, Cecilia Xuereb, BA, LP, LRSM, Dip.Educ.Mgt., was awarded honorary life membership for "her valuable contribution to the council as president, and to the world of musical education, particularly through the NCW Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition, which she has enthusiastically and successfully organised for the past 20 years and for her life-long involvement in the promotion of the nation's cultural life"

Mrs Xuereb thanked the incoming president and executive committee for bestowing this honour and expressed satisfaction at the increasing number of young members through whose contribution the work of the council can become more relevant to the needs of society today.

Founder member Jane Spiteri gave a brief overview of the history of the prestigious Bice Mizzi Vassallo Music Competition which has served as a platform for many young talented musicians, winners of the BMV Music Competition who have made a name in the international musical field.

Throughout the 40 years since its foundation, NCW has constantly been guided by strong human rights values as a result of which the council has increasingly become an important point of reference in our society.
