Former German referee Robert Hoyzer, at the heart of a major match-rigging scandal, could remain in prison on "investigative custody" for up to three months, the Berlin prosecutors' office said yesterday.

Hoyzer was arrested on February 11 after prosecutors said he may have been involved in match-fixing before 2004. They are investigating his involvement in eight alleged cases of fraud. He faces a prison term of up to 10 years if convicted on charges of involvement in organised criminal activity.

Hoyzer is cooperating with prosecutors, who are investigating a total of 25 people suspected of having manipulated at least 10 matches in 2004.
