Gonzi hails Spanish vote

Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi has written to his Spanish counterpart, José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, following the positive result of the referendum on the European Constitutional Treaty in Spain.

Dr Gonzi congratulated Mr Zapatero on the result and said the 77 per cent vote in favour had shown the Spanish people's commitment to Europe's common home. Dr Gonzi called the result "an important and historic step".

The Prime Minister said he was confident this result will have a positive impact on the ratification processes that will take place in other EU member states in the coming months.
