Coach Jimmy Briffa had no other alternative but to quit his post at struggling Division One Balzan Youths FC following their 3-1 upset to St George's on Sunday.

In a statement issued by Briffa himself yesterday, he said that at no particular stage during the team's difficult period did he wish to tender his resignation.

He added that in the interest of the team he decided to accede to the committee's request on Monday and terminate his contract with the club.

Balzan are currently ninth in the Division One standings and deeply involved in the relegation tussle. They only have ten points from 11 matches. In 2003/04, the Youths, with Briffa at the helm, played in the Premier League but were demoted at the end of the season.
