After reading the letter by Nicholas Zelle from Somerset I agree that Malta has not improved the freedom of movement but it seems as though it went backwards after May 1, 2004, because according to the records, in the past, when one brought to Malta one's personal belongings one would not pay any monstrous taxes especially on cars.

I personally went through the same experience like Mr Zelle. I visited Malta three years ago and fell in love with the island and the Maltese people. I bought a house near the sea, to have long holidays in Malta. All my family, and also friends, are coming and going and staying in my house. I decided to send my car over which I bought new in the UK about five years ago. But to my big surprise I was told at the Licensing Department that I have to pay over Lm5,000 to register this car when in the UK it has a market price of £1,500.

I will surely not register my car but will return it to the UK. Do you call this improvement in the freedom of movement?
