The Valletta Alive Foundation launch held last Friday at the Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise proved successful when eight representatives signed the charter: Paul Fenech (Republic Street Business Community), Michael Zarb (Merchants Street Business Community), Louis A. Cuschieri (Malta Chamber of Commerce and Enterprise), Mario Attard (Malta Tourism Authority), Charles Borg (Chamber of Small and Medium Enterprise), Peter Buontempo (Valletta council) and Ray Bondin (Valletta and Floriana Rehabilitation Committee).

Alfred Zahra, chairman of the Valletta Alive Initiative and chairman of the new foundation, also signed the charter.

In his introductory speech, Mr Zahra said that an AGM will be held a year from the launch, and then a new board can be appointed. This will allow enough time for the foundation to amass a good number of members, who will contribute financially and, equally importantly, be giving their time.

During the launch, Dr Paul Borg Olivier, mayor of Valletta and honorary patron of the foundation, along with Minister for Urban Development and Roads Jesmond Mugliett, said that this is a dream come true and that the city is experiencing a new renaissance.

He spoke about the need for rehabilitation of buildings while concurrently imposing heavy demands on Valletta landowners who leave their property to deteriorate. He added that the foundation will enable individuals, NGOs and businesses to come together as a consortium to see certain projects and objectives through; it is up to the public to keep the city alive.

He referred to President John F. Kennedy's famous words: "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country."

Mr Mugliett remarked on the extensive involvement of stakeholders having an interest about the city. Government is constantly seeking to promote development through public-private partnerships, such as VISET's Valletta Waterfront project. He also pointed out that transport is a priority for the foundation, and immediate projects are being tackled.

Mr Zahra was very pleased with the outcome of the launch; there was good participation, he said, and he even knew foreigners living outside Valletta who showed great interest in the city and signed up as members of the foundation.
