You reported Mayor Publio Agius as saying (February 6) that the initial agreement was to switch off the traffic lights in St Anne Street during the rush hour, and that there would be an official near the lights to control traffic in case people needed to cross.
I would like to make it clear that if there was such an agreement between Mr Agius and the authorities concerned in this respect, I was not a party to it and I would also like to state that I am absolutely against it.
My stand is in favour of the immediate and unconditional reactivation of the traffic lights which have contributed to the almost total elimination of the untimely deaths of pedestrians - a common feature before the lights were installed, apart from other numerous accidents which had resulted in both minor and serious injuries.
With these past experiences in mind, the authorities who took the decision to switch off the lights, albeit temporarily but for no really valid reason, will therefore have to shoulder the moral responsibility should an accident resulting in injuries or even loss of life occur.
