While congratulating all the Song for Europe finalists, I cannot help but complain about the low proportion of Maltese songs in competition. One should bear in mind that when a Maltese singer sings a composition by a foreign composer, the product can never be called a Maltese song.

On the other hand, if Maltese authors and composers were represented by foreign singers, their songs would still be Maltese. However, local composers and authors are denied this right.

This is an extremely unfair situation, which further limits the possibility of Maltese songwriters to exhibit their music in a contest which is seen by many as the best occasion to gain some international success.
