New PSG coach: Former player Laurent Fournier has replace sacked Vahid Halilhodzic as manager of PSG, the Ligue 1 club's president Francis Graille said yesterday. Fournier took charge at yesterday's training session ahead of a French Cup second round clash against Girondins Bordeaux on Sunday. The 40-year-old had been in charge of PSG's reserve team after playing in midfield for the ambitious Parisian club between 1991 and 1998. This season, however, PSG are lying a lowly 12th in the Ligue 1 table after being ousted from the Champions League in the first round. The French Cup is now the club's last hope of saving their season.
Gun attack: The son of CSKA Moscow president Yevgeny Giner is in a serious condition after gunmen opened fire on a jeep, hitting Vadim Giner in the chest and his bodyguard in the arm. The two men were taken to hospital where 23-year-old Giner was operated on. Police are investigating the attack which took place on Tuesday night in central Moscow. The incident is the latest in a series of violent crimes against high-profile sports people in Russia in recent years. Yevgeny Giner has been one of the most powerful figures in Russian soccer since he took over the army club in 2000.
Celta No Sample: Celta Vigo have refused to allow the analysis of the B sample given by Brazilian midfielder Everton Giovanella, who tested positive for a metabolite of the banned steroid nandrolone last week. The Spanish second division club said they would not allow the test because the coded labels on the two samples did not coincide. Giovanella said his conscience was clear after it was reported that a level of 3.7 nanograms per litre of 19-norandrosterone was detected in a random test carried out after a league match against Pontevedra on December 19. The permitted limit is two nanograms.
Gudjohnsen: Chelsea striker Eidur Gudjohnsen is adamant Chelsea are not a one-man team and believes they can win the Premier League without injured winger Arjen Robben. "The team is more than just Arjen Robben. We managed well without him at the start of the season and we will do so again," he told reporters at Stamford Bridge yesterday. "We have got a squad of quality players and I'm sure whoever replaces him will do his best for the team. We will do most of our talking on the pitch and let everyone else speculate."
