In Victoria there will be competitions for the best costume and dance, floats, grotesque masks, individual costumes, grotesque costumes and commissioned bands.

The Labi Private Dance Majorettes Studio from Slovakia will also be performing on Independence Square.

This year, the public will be given the opportunity to vote for the best carnival float. The Organising Committee (Culture) will, for the first time, be introducing the aggregate shield, which will be given to the float that collects the most votes.

A défilé is being held in Republic Street today at 5.15 p.m. and will end on Independence Square. Carnival activates resume tomorrow at 5.30 p.m. and on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

The Circolo Gozitano is holding a Sixties to Nineties Music Carnival Costume Party tomorrow from 7.30 onwards. DJs Joe Cassar (popular anchorman of a Sixties music programme on RTK) and Joe Spiteri will be in attendance.

The admission price includes a welcome drink. Finger food will be served during the activity. Dress is smart casual but prizes will be offered for those in carnival costume. Tickets are on sale from the club's bar during opening times and from all the committee members.

Sannat

Sannat council is organising carnival celebrations tomorrow. At 6.15 p.m. a défilé will be held from Sannat Road to the village square, with the participation of the St Margaret Band, accompanied by carnival floats and various dance companies.

Singers Teddy Zammit and Margherita Camilleri will compere. There will also be competitions for the best costume and masks.

Xewkija

A défilé with carnival floats and masks will be held from St Bartholomew Street to St John the Baptist Square today at 9.30 a.m. The Labi Majorettes and Band from Slovakia will be taking part.

Nadur

Competitions, divided into 11 categories, will be held on St Peter and St Paul Square today from 12.30 p.m. The Mnarja Band and the Labi Majorettes will also take part.

Xaghra

A programme of events is being held on Victory Square today from 2.30 to 8.30 p.m. Celebrations begin with marches by the Victory Band from Our Lady of Victory Street to September 8 Street and Victory Square.

Competitions for the best costume and masks will be held for adults and children. Various schools and dance companies, including the 35-strong Mystic Dancers group, will also be taking part.

Munxar

A défilé from Professor Guzé Aquilina Street and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Street to the church square is being held today at 9 a.m. The programme of events opens with the carnival anthem, with the participation of various dancers including those from St Francis School, the Zebbug Youth Centre, and the Cool Dancers. There is also a Disney Show for children.

Qala

Carnival celebrations are being held in Mgarr and April 28 1688 streets tomorrow starting 7.30 p.m. The programme includes a performance by the Ite ad Joseph Band from April 28 Street to St Joseph Square and a défilé with the participation of the pupils of Qala primary school.

Gharb

Gharb council is holding its annual carnival celebrations opposite the parish centre tomorrow from 7 p.m. Activities include costume competitions for children and performances by various dance groups from Gozo and Malta, including the Labi Majorettes.

The annual mysterious mask competition is also being held during which the public have to guess the identity of a disguised popular village personality.
