Appreciation - John M. Calleja

Clifford A. Smith writes:

As far as my memory goes, I always remember Uncle John as a nice man, wearing that impeccable smile that cheered up whoever had the blessing of meeting him. Kind hearted like no one I have ever encountered, his thoughts were always towards those in need, be they family, friends, colleagues, employees or even the man in the street he would have just met moments earlier.

Many happy memories flood my mind when I think of all his achievements as I am writing this short appreciation. From an apprentice in engineering at the dockyard, he worked and studied hard to occupy various managerial positions, including chief executive officer at the commercial and sales division at Malta Drydocks (1951-69), general manager of Malta Overseas Trading Co. (1969-71) and CEO of Malta Drydocks (1971-81), where he was loved and respected by all workers. Afterwards, he fulfilled his dream in setting up and managing Calmarine Services Ltd (1982-2005).

He also served for a number of years in various institutions including the Association of Ship Agents and the shipping and bunkering trade section of the Chamber of Commerce. He was also a life president of the Drydocks Sports and Social Club and a director of Seamalta Co. Ltd.

Far more than the titles he achieved throughout his life, Uncle John definitely earned the respect of all those who had the opportunity to work with him and also share special moments in life. His charismatic persona will definitely be missed. As a family member, a friend and an employee; I already do.

As he used to say, "it is never possible to give comprehensive information in such a brief" but the sense of emptiness his void has left among all his friends, colleagues and employees, including myself, as well as his wife Winnifred and his daughter Stephanie, will surely be felt.

He was a perfect model and mentor. That is why myself and all those who knew and loved him will follow his footsteps to keep his dream and memory alive.

May the Lord grant him eternal peace.
