The winners of the 45th Sportivi Nazzjonali contest will be named today during a presentations night at the SAS Radisson Bay Point Hotel. The event will be shown live on NetTV at 8.30 p.m.

Nominations were trimmed to five finalists in each category earlier this month before members of the Ghaqda Kittieba Sports cast their ballot to select the 2004 winners. Voting closed yesterday.

The winners will pay a courtesy visit to President Eddie Fenech Adami on Wednesday.

As in previous editions, the organisers have invited a number of local sports personalities to present the awards.

This time it will be the turn of Jesmond Giordemaina, Helen Asciak, Louis Micallef, Victor Scerri and Jean Paul Fleri Soler to hand out the trophies to the winners.

Besides, sight-impaired sports enthusiast Joseph Micallef will present special prizes to disabled athletes Daniela Borg and Stephen Fenech from the Malta Wheelchair Dance Sport.

The distinguished guest of the night will be 65-year-old Livio Berruti, a former Olympic gold medal winner for Italy. He was first in the 200m sprint in the Rome Olympics, way back in 1960.

This year is also a special one for the sportswriters association as they are marking their 35th anniversary.

The 2003 winners were: William Chetcuti, Tanya Blake, the women's basketball team, football referee Adrian Casha and Benji Borg.
