Christian unity is one of the major prerogatives of the universal Church. The Second Vatican Council gave a powerful thrust to the cause of Christian unity.
Every Catholic Christian is called to cherish, pray and work for the unity of Christ's disciples. Far from being an armchair interest, ecumenism entails a way of life, grounded on a love that gives itself for others because of and as a service to the truth.
As I see it, ecumenism is a way of life. It needs to be grounded on a vital and central attitude that inspires the way one views, thinks about and considers other Christians.
The key for an effective ecumenism lies in a Eucharistic vision to the Christian unity project. The more Christians reflect together and let themselves be changed by the powerful reality of the Eucharistic, the more their attitudes and ways of life become Eucharistic.
Such a mentality and a way of being creates more solidarity, dialogue and an assiduous search for what is true in the spirit of a sacrificial love.
May the Lord Jesus instill in all those who claim they are his by a strong desire and a committed living response to his wish, that all who believe in him may be one, as his Father and himself are one. As it stands, a Eucharistic attitude is certainly a milestone towards the attainment of Christ's wish.
