Alternattiva Demokratika spokesman Victor Galea recently wrote to EU Commissioner for the environment Dr Stavoras Dimas, requesting him to investigate why the Maltese government and MEPA have failed to include Ta' Cenc in the list of sites to be protected under the Natura 2000 network scheme.
In his letter Mr Galea outlined the ecological, ornithological and geomorphologic uniqueness of Ta' Cenc and described how it is an ideal candidate for protection, management and conservation under the Natura 2000 scheme.
Mr Galea also expressed his disappointment at how MEPA, which is supposedly for the protection of the environment, could possibly earmark this important part of Malta's natural heritage as a site for the development of a golf course. He also pointed out that the Maltese Government and MEPA have not given any public explanation as to why they decided not to include Ta' Cenc in the Natura 2000 network.
