Charged with policemen's attempted murder

A Tarxien man was yesterday charged with trying to kill five police officers when he drove a car in their direction on Monday.

Magistrate Abigail Lofaro heard Paul Debattista, 41, plead not guilty to the attempted murder of a police inspector and four constables and assaulting and disobeying them in Vittoriosa.

Debattista also pleaded not guilty to driving recklessly, damaging a traffic sign and two cars - one of which was a police car - and relapsing.

He was granted bail against a Lm5,000 deposit and a personal guarantee of Lm15,000.

Police Inspector Nezren Grixti prosecuted.

Dr Joseph Giglio appeared for Debattista.
