Stephen Hendry made a vital break of 69 in the deciding ninth frame to win his match 5-4 against fellow Scot Stephen Maguire at the Welsh Open yesterday. The master retained his authority over the apprentice in the first competitive match between the long-term practice partners as seven-times world champion Hendry progressed to the last 16 at the Newport Centre. Maguire, 23, has had a fantastic season so far, reaching the final of the British Open and winning the UK Championship in November.
