The Foreign Ministry said yesterday that a BMW 520i car for Malta's embassy in Budapest was bought in June 2004, months before the Cabinet, on a proposal by Minister Michael Frendo, decided that the embassy should be closed down.

The ministry, reacting to remarks in Parliament by opposition foreign affairs spokesman Leo Brincat, said the embassy was being closed as part of a rationalisation plan. The car would be used by another embassy and there was therefore no waste of public funds.
