England flyhalf Jonny Wilkinson could miss the entire Six Nations championship after conceding he will need more time to recover from a knee injury.

Wilkinson suffered ligament damage in his left knee playing for his club Newcastle against Perpignan in a Heineken Cup match a week ago.

The injury was initially diagnosed as a minor tear, with an expected recovery time of four to six weeks, but it is now feared he could be sidelined for up to eight weeks.

"I am off crutches now but walking is still hampered, so I know I can't kick," he was quoted as saying. "It would have been harder having to stop myself from kicking if it had just been a slight strain."

England launch their 2005 campaign against Wales in Cardiff on February 5, followed by champions France at Twickenham eight days later.
