On Wednesday the European Parliament overwhelmingly voted in favour of the new European Constitution. Five hundred members of Parliament voted in favour, 137 voted against and 40 abstained.

Of the five Maltese MEPs, only the two Nationalists voted in favour, the Labour MEPs abstained. The Constitution goes into effect only if it is ratified by all 25 member states.

If all goes well, the process is scheduled to be concluded by the end of 2006.
