Gianfranco Zola scored in extra-time to knock holders Lazio out of the Italian Cup yesterday and put Cagliari into the quarter-finals on the away goals rule. Lazio won the second leg 3-2 but after losing 2-1 away in the first leg they tumbled out in the third round.

The troubled Rome side looked to be cruising into the last eight with goals either side of half-time from midfielder Antonio Filippini and striker Tommaso Rocchi.

Cagliari looked short on ideas in attack but with nine minutes remaining David Suazo nodded the ball into the path Daniele Conti, who hooked past Matteo Sereni to take the game into extra-time.

In the 102nd minute Lazio's defence allowed Zola to lash the ball into the roof of the net and despite a late strike by Rocchi to make the aggregate score 4-4, Cagliari progressed thanks to their two goals at the Olimpico.

In another thrilling match yesterday, Udinese also progressed on the away goals rule after drawing 8-8 with Lecce on aggregate.

David Di Michele (6), Vincenzo Iaquinta (88) and Antonio Di Natale (90) scored the all-important goals for Udinese. Mirko Vucinic (39, 84) Sasa Bjelanovic (46) and Cedric Konan (82) were on the mark for Lecce.

Udinese and Cagliari were joined in the last eight by Roma, who overturned a 2-1 first leg deficit by thrashing Siena 5-1 to win 6-3 on aggregate.

Early strikes by Traianos Dellas and Francesco Totti and a Massimo Maccarone penalty for Siena left the contest evenly-balanced at half-time, but goals by Antonio Cassano and Vincenzo Montella after the restart put the result beyond doubt.

Daniele Corvia added a fifth just after the hour and the late dismissal of defender Bruno Cirillo completed Siena's woes.

Juventus eliminated

A hat-trick by Atalanta's Andrea Lazzari dumped Juventus out of the competition after the Serie A leaders were held to a 3-3 draw in Turin to go out 5-3 on aggregate.

Juventus, who lost the first leg 2-0, needed to win by three clear goals to progress and were off to a flier after a Cesare Natali own goal put them ahead after four minutes.

But Lazzari had other ideas as he fired in three goals, in the 10th, 43rd and 90th minutes, that sealed his side's passage to the last eight where they play Inter.

Marcelo Zalayeta (33) and David Trezeguet (79) were the other scorers for Juventus who had Alessio Tacchinardi sent off on 79 minutes.
