The Xewkija drama group will be presenting a play in Maltese entitled Hasan Il-Malti by Carmel Camilleri at the parish centre in Xewkija.

The story of Hasan will take the audience back to 1540, when the Turks kidnapped a baron's child together with his servant Rozi and headed back towards Tunisia.

However, when Rozi saved the seriously injured head of the Turks, Idris, he repaid her by allowing her to look after his son, Ali, whom she brought up with the tiny Maltese, Hasan.

She brought them up like brothers but as they were growing up jealousy drove a wedge between the two boys especially after they found out that they were not real brothers. And this became worse when Ali married Selima who was more attracted to Hasan.

When Rozi was dying, she told Hasan that his real mother lived in Malta and he eloped with Selima back to his native island.

The play reaches its climax when Ali catches up with the two of them in the cave that has become known in Malta as Ghar Hasan.

The play, produced by John Attard, will be staged tomorrow at 7 p.m. and on January 23 at 5.30 p.m.
